KAUNAS CITY MUNICIPALITY

KAUNAS CITY MUNICIPALITY | COMPETITION | 3rd PRIZE

URBAN IDEA

The edges of the volume are shaped by the route of St. GertrÅ«da Street and the future neighborhood’s pedestrian alley from west to east. These routes are oriented toward the historical path leading to Kaunas Castle and create a trapezoidal volume. This closes the composition, and a structure typical of the old town’s space is formed in its central area, in this case, a public space not at ground level, but on the roof.

ARCHITECTURAL IDEA

To respond sensitively to the heritage context, the proportions of volumes, shapes, and elements are analyzed. Although the building has a unified architectural expression, it consists of two logical formations of volume. One is dedicated to the old town—a sloped volume characteristic of the old town’s proportions, organized along St. GertrÅ«da Street, while the other is suitable for the proportions and silhouette of the new neighborhood on the northern side. This volume descends toward the public space and thus completes the silhouette of the newly forming neighborhood towards Kaunas Castle.
