KLAIPĖDA COURTHOUSE

COMPETITION ENTRY

The designed building is situated in an environment that is diverse both urbanistically and socially. The northern part is a free-standing residential area with apartment buildings, while the southern part is an industrial zone. This situation calls for a sensitive approach to the context. The building responds urbanistically to the proportions of the adjacent built environment, continues the street frontage, and its materiality is characteristic and contextual within the city. Inevitably, the building’s architecture is also influenced by the somewhat romantic character of the neighboring industrial area. The building itself sets a precedent for sustainable and high-quality architecture in a territory that will inevitably undergo transformation in the future.

For city and district residents, it is important that this courthouse building introduces a new public space, establishes new pedestrian connections, and creates a green buffer from the prospective street. From an environmental/ecological standpoint, it is important that valuable trees are preserved, biodiversity is promoted, and a tree-lined alley is integrated into the public space.
